MAEL103 Assignment Brief

Module code MAEL103
Module title Human Resources Management for Educational Leaders
MQF level Level 7
ECTS 5

Task 1

Task type  Reflective Journal
Task description “It is not the doing that matters it’s the thinking about the doing”

                             -John Dewey-

The ‘Reflective Journal’ will explore the relationships, learning experiences and encounters one would have made during one’s career, with the Leadership team, teachers, parents, and, students and how these help one  to grow professionally through becoming a reflective practitioner.

Reflective practice is an examination and critique of our experiences throughout our professional life. There are several models that help us achieve this. Gibbs’ Reflective Cycle provides a simple yet comprehensive framework He provides us with a series of questions that one can ask oneself when reflecting on incidents, relationships, and tasks that one encounters daily at the place of work be it at school or an office. Keeping a ‘Reflective Journal’ can be an effective way not only for one to reflect but also to grow professionally.

Every week (5 Weeks) during the duration of the module reflect on an incident, encounter, or task you had to do or came across and reflect on it using the Gibbs’ Reflective Cycle. (an image of the cycle is given below). A video explaining Gibbs’ Reflective Cycle is also uploaded in this course resource.

Task weighting  60/100 Reflective Journal
Task length (approx. 500 – 600 words per week) 2500 -3000 words
Additional requirements  PLEASE NOTE:

  • It is suggested that you write around 500-600 words on each entry so that each entry is given approximately the same weight. However, it is understandable that some entries might require more or fewer words.
  • You do not need to finish the weekly entry by that week. You might use a system where you take some points each week for you to remember and then write it at a later stage. The important thing is that you submit the completed reflective journal by the deadline. How you go about it is your prerogative.
  • You do not need to post your weekly reflective journal in any forum (General or Weekly). You only need to submit a complete reflective Journal by the deadline after the end of the module.
  • If you need further clarification, use the General forum

Content is weak, incoherent and superficial. It does not provide enough for the independence of the NQTs and does not link to further professional learning. Not driven by self-reflection. Content is rather expository than analytical. Concepts and plans are described briefly. It provides little independence to NQTs and barely links further to professional learning. Little mention of self-reflection. The content is strong and interesting. Although it is structured to increase independence for NQTs, it plays it safe and does not push boundaries. Mentions selfreflection. Content is original and creative. Goes substantially beyond points raised in lectures and readings. Concepts are related to each other in interesting and creative ways. Provides clear evidence outline for quality induction. Driven by selfreflection and linked to further professional learning and so it is progressive.
